Single Implants
Replace missing teeth seamlessly with our premium single implants

Single Dental Implants – Replace One Missing Tooth Naturally
At Bedrock Dentistry, our single dental implant treatment replaces one missing tooth with a permanent solution that looks, feels, and functions exactly like your natural tooth. Unlike bridges that require grinding down healthy adjacent teeth or removable partial dentures that slip and feel bulky, a single dental implant is a standalone titanium post that integrates with your jawbone to support a custom crown—preserving your other teeth and giving you a stable, beautiful result that lasts a lifetime.
What is a single dental implant?
A single dental implant is a complete tooth replacement system consisting of three parts: a titanium implant post surgically placed into your jawbone (acting as the artificial tooth root), an abutment connector piece, and a custom ceramic crown that matches your natural teeth perfectly. This three-piece system replaces everything from root to crown, restoring full function and appearance without affecting neighboring teeth.
Single implants can replace any missing tooth in your mouth—from highly visible front teeth (anterior implants) to chewing teeth in the back (posterior implants). Each location requires specific planning, surgical techniques, and crown design to ensure optimal results.
Why choose a single implant over a bridge or partial denture?
Preserves healthy teeth: Dental bridges require permanently grinding down the healthy teeth on both sides of the gap to serve as anchors. This irreversibly damages those teeth and creates future problems. Single implants don't touch your adjacent teeth—they're completely independent replacements.
Prevents bone loss: When you lose a tooth, the jawbone underneath begins shrinking immediately because it no longer receives stimulation from chewing forces. A dental implant transfers chewing forces directly into the bone just like a natural tooth root, preserving bone volume and preventing the facial collapse that occurs with bridges and dentures.
Permanent and stable: Implants are fixed permanently in your jaw—they don't slip, click, or move when eating or speaking like removable partial dentures. You can eat anything you want with complete confidence.
Natural appearance: Modern implant crowns are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth, with custom shading, translucency, and contours that blend seamlessly with your smile.
Easy maintenance: You care for an implant crown exactly like a natural tooth—brush, floss, and regular dental checkups. No special adhesives, soaking solutions, or removal required.
Long-term value: While implants have higher upfront costs than bridges, they last decades longer (often 25+ years or lifetime) and don't damage adjacent teeth, making them more cost-effective long-term.
Single implants in the front teeth (anterior esthetic zone)
Front tooth implants require the highest level of surgical precision and artistic skill because even small positioning errors become visible when you smile, talk, or laugh. The front teeth are in the "esthetic zone" where gum contours, tooth shape, color matching, and how the crown emerges from the gums all matter enormously.
We use advanced CBCT 3D imaging to plan your front tooth implant position down to the millimeter before surgery, ensuring the implant is placed at exactly the right depth, angle, and distance from neighboring teeth. This digital planning allows us to predict the final crown appearance and gum contours, avoiding dark shadows, bulky contours, or uneven gum lines that make implants look artificial.
Bone grafting is almost always necessary for front tooth implants to create adequate bone volume and proper ridge contours that support natural-looking gum tissue. We typically place bone graft material around the implant during placement to fill gaps and rebuild the ridge width.
Soft tissue grafting (gum grafting) is frequently performed at the same time to increase gum thickness, create ideal gum height around the implant, and establish natural pink esthetic framework. Thick, healthy gum tissue prevents recession around the implant crown and creates the scalloped contours that match your adjacent teeth.
Angled abutments may be used when ideal implant positioning for bone support requires placing the implant at an angle that doesn't perfectly align with how your natural tooth should emerge. The angled abutment corrects this angle between the implant and crown, ensuring your final tooth looks perfectly natural.
Temporary tooth options during healing: We provide a flipper, Essix retainer with fake tooth, or in select cases a temporary implant crown so you're never without a visible tooth. However, you cannot bite or chew on the temporary during the 3-4 month healing period—any pressure can prevent the implant from integrating with bone.
Single implants in the back teeth (posterior)
Back tooth implants focus primarily on restoring chewing function rather than esthetics, though we still create natural-looking crowns. Posterior implants typically handle higher chewing forces than front teeth, so implant positioning must optimize bone support and force distribution.
CBCT planning is equally important for back teeth to identify nerve locations (especially the inferior alveolar nerve in the lower jaw and maxillary sinus in the upper jaw) and ensure adequate bone height and width for stable implant placement.
Bone grafting is common but not always required for posterior implants, depending on how long the tooth has been missing and your natural bone quality. We may perform socket preservation bone grafting at the time of extraction to maintain bone volume, or place bone graft during implant surgery if needed.
Sinus lift procedures are frequently needed for upper back tooth implants when the maxillary sinus has expanded downward after tooth loss, leaving insufficient bone height. We lift the sinus membrane and place bone graft material to create adequate vertical bone for implant stability.
Healing time and crown placement: After posterior implant placement, you'll need 3-4 months for osseointegration (bone bonding to the implant) before we place the final crown. You can typically eat on the other side of your mouth during healing, and we may provide a temporary partial denture if the gap is visible when you smile.
What is the single implant procedure process?
Consultation and planning: We perform comprehensive examination, take CBCT 3D scans, evaluate your bone quality and gum tissue, and digitally plan your implant position. We'll show you exactly where the implant will go and what your final result will look like.
Implant placement surgery: Under local anesthesia (with sedation available if desired), we place the titanium implant post into your jawbone at the precisely planned position. Bone grafting and gum grafting are performed at the same time if needed. The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours depending on complexity.
Healing period (3-4 months): The implant integrates with your jawbone during this critical healing phase. You'll wear a temporary tooth replacement (for front teeth) or may have a small gap (for back teeth). No chewing on the implant site during this time.
Abutment and crown placement: Once the implant has fully integrated, we attach the abutment connector and take impressions for your custom crown. The final crown is fabricated in a specialized dental laboratory and permanently cemented onto the abutment 2-3 weeks later.
Am I a candidate for a single dental implant?
You're likely a good candidate if you:
Are missing one tooth (or need one tooth extracted)
Have adequate bone volume or are willing to undergo bone grafting
Have healthy gums or will treat gum disease before implant placement
Don't smoke or are willing to quit (smoking significantly increases implant failure risk)
Have good overall health and no uncontrolled medical conditions
Are committed to excellent oral hygiene and regular dental maintenance
Age is rarely a limitation—we successfully place implants in patients from their early twenties through their eighties and beyond.
How long do single dental implants last?
With proper care and regular maintenance, single dental implants have a 95-98% success rate and commonly last 25+ years or even a lifetime. The implant itself is made of biocompatible titanium that integrates permanently with bone, while the crown may eventually need replacement due to normal wear (typically after 15-20 years). This longevity far exceeds bridges (10-15 year average) or partial dentures (5-7 years).
