Implant-Supported Dentures – Stable, Secure Tooth Replacement

At Bedrock Dentistry, our implant-supported dentures combine the affordability of dentures with the stability and security of dental implants, giving you a tooth replacement solution that stays firmly in place when eating and speaking—without the slipping, clicking, or discomfort of traditional removable dentures. By anchoring your denture to strategically placed dental implants, we restore confident chewing ability, eliminate messy adhesives, and prevent the progressive bone loss and facial collapse that occurs with conventional dentures.

What are implant-supported dentures?

Implant-supported dentures (also called overdentures or snap-on dentures) are removable dentures that attach securely to dental implants placed in your jawbone. Instead of resting on your gums and relying on suction or adhesives to stay in place, implant-supported dentures snap onto or clip into implant attachments, providing rock-solid stability while still allowing you to remove the denture for cleaning.
Typically, we place 2-4 implants in your upper or lower jaw and attach specialized connectors (locator attachments, ball attachments, or bars) to those implants. Your custom denture has corresponding receptacles that snap onto these attachments, locking the denture firmly in position until you intentionally remove it.

Types of implant-supported dentures

Removable implant-supported dentures (overdentures): The denture snaps onto implants but you remove it daily for cleaning. This is the most common and affordable implant denture option.
  • Lower arch: Typically requires 2-4 implants for excellent stability
  • Upper arch: Usually requires 4-6 implants due to softer bone quality and larger surface area
Fixed implant-supported dentures (hybrid dentures): The denture is permanently screwed onto 4-6 implants and can only be removed by your dentist. This provides the closest experience to natural teeth but costs more than removable overdentures. (Note: Full-arch All-on-X treatment is the premium version of this option.)

Why choose implant-supported dentures over traditional dentures?

No slipping or clicking: Implant dentures lock securely in place—you can eat, laugh, and speak confidently without worry about your denture moving or falling out.
Restored chewing power: Traditional dentures provide only 20-30% of natural bite force. Implant-supported dentures restore 60-70% of your chewing ability, allowing you to eat tougher foods like steak, apples, and corn on the cob that are impossible with regular dentures.
No adhesives needed: Say goodbye to messy denture adhesives, pastes, and powders. Your denture snaps firmly onto the implants without any glues.
Prevents bone loss: Dental implants stimulate your jawbone just like natural tooth roots, dramatically slowing the bone deterioration that causes traditional denture wearers to experience shrinking ridges, loose-fitting dentures, and aged facial appearance over time.
Better comfort: Implant dentures can be designed smaller and less bulky than traditional dentures because they don't rely on maximum gum coverage for retention. Upper implant dentures can often eliminate the palate covering, restoring normal taste and speech.
Improved confidence: The security and stability of implant dentures restore your confidence in social situations—eat, smile, and speak without the constant worry that your denture might slip.

How many implants do I need for an implant-supported denture?

Lower jaw (mandible):
  • Minimum: 2 implants provide basic stability and significant improvement over traditional dentures
  • Recommended: 4 implants offer excellent stability and more even force distribution
  • Lower implant dentures are highly successful because the lower jawbone is dense and implants integrate predictably
Upper jaw (maxilla):
  • Minimum: 4 implants due to softer bone quality
  • Recommended: 4-6 implants for optimal stability and comfort
  • Upper implant dentures are more challenging due to softer bone and may require sinus lift procedures
More implants provide better stability, more even chewing force distribution, and longer-term success—but also increase cost. We'll recommend the optimal number based on your bone quality, budget, and functional goals.

What is the implant-supported denture procedure process?

Comprehensive evaluation and planning: We perform clinical examination, CBCT 3D scans, and bone quality assessment to determine optimal implant positions and how many implants you need. If you currently wear dentures, we'll evaluate whether your existing denture can be converted or if you need a new one.
Implant placement surgery: Under local anesthesia (with sedation available), we place 2-6 dental implants at strategically planned positions in your jaw. Bone grafting is performed if needed to augment insufficient bone volume. Surgery typically takes 1-2 hours.
Healing period (3-4 months): The implants must integrate completely with your jawbone before we can attach the denture. You'll wear your existing denture or a temporary denture during this healing phase (carefully adjusted so it doesn't put pressure on healing implants).
Attachment placement and denture conversion: Once implants have fully integrated, we attach the connector components (locators, balls, or bar) to the implants and either convert your existing denture or fabricate a new custom denture with the corresponding attachment receptacles that snap onto the implants.
Final fitting and adjustment: We ensure proper fit, comfortable bite alignment, and teach you how to snap the denture in and out. Minor adjustments are common during the first few weeks as you adapt to your new implant denture.

Can my existing denture be converted to an implant-supported denture?

Often, yes—if your current denture fits well and is in good condition. Converting an existing denture is more affordable than fabricating a completely new denture. However, if your current denture is old, ill-fitting, worn down, or has incorrect bite alignment, we'll recommend a new denture to ensure optimal function and longevity.

How do I care for implant-supported dentures?

Daily care:
  • Remove the denture each night and soak in denture cleaning solution
  • Brush the denture thoroughly with denture brush and cleaner
  • Brush your gums, tongue, and palate with a soft toothbrush
  • Critical: Clean around the implant attachments in your mouth with a soft toothbrush or special implant brush to prevent peri-implantitis (gum disease around implants)
Professional maintenance:
  • Visit every 3-6 months for professional cleaning around the implants
  • Attachment components may need replacement every 1-2 years as they wear (this is normal and inexpensive)
  • Denture relines may be needed every few years as minor bone changes occur

Am I a candidate for implant-supported dentures?

You're likely a good candidate if you:
  • Currently wear traditional dentures and struggle with slipping, poor chewing, or discomfort
  • Are missing all or most teeth in your upper or lower arch
  • Have adequate bone volume or are willing to undergo bone grafting
  • Want better stability than traditional dentures but aren't ready for the investment of full-arch All-on-X
  • Prefer a removable option you can clean thoroughly each day
  • Have good overall health and are committed to excellent oral hygiene

How much do implant-supported dentures cost?

Implant-supported dentures cost significantly more than traditional dentures due to the surgical implant placement, but substantially less than fixed full-arch solutions like All-on-X. Total cost depends on the number of implants, amount of bone grafting needed, and whether we convert your existing denture or fabricate new.
As a general guide:
  • Lower implant denture (2-4 implants): More affordable, highly predictable
  • Upper implant denture (4-6 implants): Higher cost due to more implants and potential sinus lifts
During your consultation, we'll provide detailed cost estimates and discuss financing options to make treatment affordable.

Implant-supported dentures vs. All-on-X: What's the difference?

Implant-supported dentures (overdentures) use 2-4 implants, are removable, and cost less—ideal for patients who want significant improvement over traditional dentures at moderate investment.
All-on-X uses 4-6 implants, is permanently fixed (non-removable), provides the closest experience to natural teeth, and costs more—ideal for patients who want the absolute best function and esthetics and never want to remove their teeth.
Both are excellent solutions; the right choice depends on your priorities, budget, and lifestyle preferences.
